Call for second post mortem
Wednesday, 14 July 2010
SOLICITORS for two teens arrested and later released in the investigation into the murder of an Athlone pensioner are calling for an independent post mortem examination.
“We're hoping to have it done by the end of the week," Superintendent Michael Devine of the Navan Garda Station confirmed yesterday (Monday).
Two teens, a 16-year-old and 19-year-old, were held for 24 hours and questioned about the tragic death of Martin O'Gorman of Battery Road in Athlone, as part of a murder investigation.
An avid GAA fan, Martin O'Gorman had traveled to Navan to socialise after Meath's victory over Laois in Tullamore. He was discovered with apparent head injuries around 12:30am on June 21. A passing taxi driver spotted him lying on Academy Street in Navan. He was rushed to hospital but died almost a week later. A post mortem by the deputy state pathologist Dr. Michael Curtis, revealed he had been assaulted. Now solicitors for the teens are requesting a second post mortem to be carried out. Gardai arrested the two teens who were questioned at Kells and Navan Garda Stations last week. A third, a 19-year-old was also arrested but for 'withholding information.'
All three have since been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Most of the external inquiries have been completed in the case, the Superintendent said, but a few others remain. It's possible further arrests may occur.
From the outset, he added, this case was "more a random act or thuggery."
“The difficulty is normally you have a motive, or there's some specific reason," Superintendent Devine said.
A former pupil of Gormanston College, in Co. Meath, Mr O'Gorman was in the Leaving Certificate class of 1964. A bachelor, he is survived by his two younger brothers, Paschal and Dermot, and many nephews and nieces.
Mr O'Gorman is to be buried following funeral Mass in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, once his body has been released to his family.
